Freemasonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternity. In New York, our organization consists of adult men 21 years of age or older. But not everyone can become a Freemason. We are VERY selective. Our membership is exclusive and made up solely of men of good character from every country, religion, race, age, income, education, and opinion, who believe in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry’s body of knowledge and system of ethics is based on the belief that each man has a responsibility to improve himself while being devoted to his family, faith, country, and of course, the fraternity.
Freemasonry (often simplified to “Masonry”) means different things to each individual member. We use the motto “Freemasonry takes good men and makes them better.” Masonry enhances and strengthens the character of each individual man by providing opportunities for fellowship, charity, education and leadership based on the three ancient Masonic tenets: Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.
Fellowship
By attending Lodge meetings and learning from your fellow Masons, you’ll strengthen the bonds of fellowship as you associate yourself with like-minded men who share higher ideals of morality. You’ll also enjoy the friendship of other Masons; not only in our community – but everywhere you go in this world.
Charity
Freemasons have always been devoted to caring for disadvantaged children, the sick and the elderly. In fact, Masons contribute approximately $2 million PER DAY to national and local charities. More than 70% of these donations are disbursed directly to the general public. Masons are also greatly involved in a great deal of community volunteer work.
Education
Masonic ceremonies provide instruction to all our members, supplemented by various other activities such as seminars, lectures, workshops, and of course, reading. Because Freemasonry is an esoteric society, certain aspects of its work are not disclosed to the public by the organization. Freemasonry uses an initiatory system of degrees to explore ethical and philosophical issues. Our fraternity is clearly described in Masonic Craft Ritual as “a beautiful system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbolism.”
Leadership
Freemasonry offers all its members leadership opportunities at the Lodge, District, and Grand Lodge level. As Freemasons progress through the Craft, they discover different aspects of themselves and develop a large range of skills that even they might not have known they possessed.
